Understanding Tool Tethers and Lanyards in Rope Access – Topic Sheet No. 31

Dropped tools remain one of the most preventable yet persistent hazards in work-at-height operations. IRATA has released Topic Sheet No. 31: Tool Tethering and Lanyards, providing guidance on reducing the risk of dropped tools and equipment through proper tethering practices and preventative measures.

Appropriate Selection of Tethers

The topic sheet categorises the types of tool tethers into lanyards, retractable tethers, tool holsters and bags and emphasises the importance of selecting the right tether based on key selection criteria, including load rating, tether length, and material.

It also outlines best practices, such as using the correct attachment methods, conducting regular inspections, and providing specific training relevant to the tools, tasks, and environment.

Tool Tether Case Studies

Two case studies are examined, highlighting the consequences of improper tethering practices and inadequate risk assessment.

Case study 1 involves a tool that dropped 35m into a manned exclusion zone after its tether, made from an accessory cord, failed due to an incorrectly tied knot that came loose while the technician changed position.

In case study 2, a heavy electric magnetic drill (mag drill) was tethered to the technician’s harness during drilling, rather than being independently secured. When a third party disconnected its power, the mag drill fell, cutting the technician’s leg and bruising their hip as a result of the force transfer into the harness, resulting in the need for rescue.
