Following the start of commercial crude oil production in its coastal waters in 2019, Guyana has been identified as a location set for significant growth in the Oil and Gas industry. Oil production has surged, with projections indicating that output will reach 1 million bpd in 2025.
In response to these industrial developments, Guyanese authorities have been building the framework to ensure the safety of offshore operations, including safe work at height. To reinforce this effort, IRATA has collaborated with local member company Panthera Solutions Inc. to bring awareness of IRATA’s working practices to Guyana’s Ministry of Labour and the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), which manages the development and publication of standards in Guyana.
We are delighted to announce that the GNBS has officially adopted the IRATA ‘International Code of Practice’ (ICOP) as the national standard for rope access; the standard can be accessed via the GNBS website HERE.

CSCS Statement on Industry Accreditation:
All Industry Accreditation (IA) cards issued from 1st January 2020 will expire on 31st December 2024 and cannot be replaced using IA. This is to meet industry requirements, which state that all construction industry card schemes must operate with nationally recognised qualifications in place for all occupations.
Level 3 Technicians
CSCS accept IRATA Level 3 certification as equivalent to a NVQ level 2 qualification, and therefore current (in date) Level 3 technicians can apply for the CSCS ‘Blue Skilled Worker Card’. Click HERE to apply and then click the ‘Search by occupation’ button; and enter the text ‘Temporary Industrial Rope Access Installer’ in the space provided. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your application.
Level 1 & 2 Technicians should apply for a CSCS card based upon a recognised trade qualification, or they can apply for a provisional card with no specific trade qualifications, or membership of a trade association or organisation.

IRATA is pleased to announce the release of its newly updated Incident Reporting Form [FM-021ENG] and associated guidance document, implemented to refine the reporting process and make it easier for members to report incidents.
Members can access the reporting portal in the members’ area through the existing ‘Incident Reporting’ button.
Key guidance is now embedded within the online form, while more detailed information is available in the ‘Guidance to IRATA Incident Reporting’ [GU-265ENG].
Some notable changes to reporting categories for “Incident circumstance” (On rope, Training, Other), “Level assessed to”, and “Injury type” have been made to address gaps that were identified through review of historical reports.
The Work and Safety Statistics Returns will be brought in line with the changes that have been implemented, effective from April 1st, 2024, when the collection of data for Q1 2024 begins. More information will be released toward the end of Q1.
We hope that these updates will foster a more precise and effective incident reporting system for our members, ultimately contributing to a safer working environment. Your reports are for informational and educational purposes, forming the basis for our Safety Bulletins and Topic Sheets, as well as providing the vital data for our industry recognised annual WASA report.

We would like to thank all those who attended the London Work at Height Seminar (LWAHS) on its return to the London Guildhall. With guests travelling from as far as the UAE, India and Brazil, the fifth LWAHS was a great success providing an opportunity for industry counterparts to come together to further their professional knowledge and safety awareness of the wider work at height industry.
The LWAHS welcomed Joanna Carrington, Jonathan Cooper and Jamie Ruxton from the City of London Corporation, who offered valuable insights into the impact of safety culture within the City.
Principal Designer and CDM Adviser at Baily Garner (Health & Safety) Ltd, Adam Smith, complemented these insights with a discussion on the practical implementation of the ‘hierarchy of controls’ and how this helps to reduce risk throughout the design and construction process in the City.
Stephen Green from the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), presented the impact of workplace culture on safe working practices and Simon Richmond, Senior Technical Officer at the Arboricultural Association, informed the audience of arboreal industries’ continuous progression to safer working practices. Peter Bennet OBE represented the Access Industry Forum (AIF) and provided statistical data, and updates from the APPG on working at height.
IRATA International was represented by Dr Sheila Kondaveeti and Jonathan Capper, IRATA’s CEO and Executive Chair. Dr Kondaveeti expressed the benefits of using IRATA members for industrial rope access needs, stating that “the cost of unsafe working practices will far outweigh any savings in the short term. Jonathan spoke about the IRATA safe system of work.
