New Guidance on Tensioned Lines: IRATA International Publishes ICOP Annex T en

20/10/2025

IRATA International has released Annex T: Tensioned Lines Guidance as part of the IRATA International Code of Practice (ICOP). This new resource provides guidance on the safe application, risks, and control measures associated with tensioned lines in industrial rope access.

Raising Awareness and Setting Standards

Tensioned lines are an essential tool in rope access, providing a safe means of movement and positioning where other rigging methods are not suitable or available. Despite their wide use in complex projects, no industry standard has specifically addressed their application in industrial rope access. Annex T provides guidance to help bridge this gap.

Key Guidance Areas

The Annex includes information on:

Applications: work positioning, work restraint, fall arrest and rescue systems.

Risks: anchor failure, equipment failure, rope failure, and human error.

Control Measures: double protection, appropriate planning, and comprehensive risk assessments.

Anchors and Equipment: strength, reliability, standards and industry testing.

Training: emphasis on competency, correct equipment use, and alignment with IRATA’s Training, Assessment and Certification Scheme (TACS).
